§ 10-47. Fire chief: assistant.

  • (a)

    The chief of the city fire department shall be ranking officer, and be in charge of the control, fighting, and prevention of fire, and in command of the fire department created by this article. The chief shall have power to make such rules and regulations as are proper and necessary for the conducting of the duties of the fire department, and establish and regulate the duties and hours of duty of the fire department created by this article, subject however, to the approval of the city administrator, and subject also to any further rules and regulations that may be established by resolution of the city council. The chief shall be responsible for the care, custody and control of all fire-fighting equipment and apparatus of the city and buildings used exclusively by the fire department. The chief is specifically charged with upgrading and improvements in the areas of planning, training and administration, looking toward a constantly improving department and continued lowering of fire underwriters' ratings.

    (b)

    At any time the chief of the city fire department may be absent, disabled or for any reason unable to act, an assistant fire chief or other designee, to be selected by the city administrator, with the advice and recommendation of the chief of the city fire department shall assume his powers and perform his duties.
