§ 21-1. Appointment of deputy chief of police.

  • (a)

    Appointment of position. From and after the effective date of this section the position of deputy chief shall be appointed by the chief of the police department.

    (b)

    Additional positions. If the council determines, in the future, to create a second deputy chief position, so long as the City of Effingham Police Department has at least twenty-five (25) full-time police officers, the appointment of such second deputy chief shall also be made by the chief of police.

    (c)

    Requirements. The deputy chief shall be appointed from any rank of sworn full-time officers of the city police department and shall have at least five (5) years of full-time service as a police officer with the City of Effingham.

    (d)

    Service. The deputy chief shall serve at the discretion of the chief and, if removed from the position, shall revert to the rank held immediately prior to appointment to the deputy chief position.
