§ 2-381. Nepotism.

  • Personnel decisions shall be based upon merit, rather than a family advantage. Therefore, no public official or appointing authority of the City shall, by virtue of his/her office or employment, name or appoint to public office or employment, any relative within the fourth (4th) degree of consanguinity or affinity to the public official or appointing authority or their spouse.

    For the purposes of this policy the four (4) degrees of consanguinity or affinity are defined herein:

    First Degree Relation to Self or Spouse

    • Child

    • Parents

    Second Degree Relation to Self or Spouse

    • Grandchild

    • Brother/Sister

    • Grandparents

    Third Degree Relation to Self or Spouse

    • Great Grandchild

    • Niece/Nephew

    • Aunt/Uncle

    • Great Grandparents

    Fourth Degree Relation to Self or Spouse

    • Great Great Grandchild

    • Grand Niece/Nephew

    • First Cousin

    • Great Aunt/Uncle

    • Great Great Grandparents

    Employees who are related in any of the relationships listed above shall not hold a position which involves the performance evaluation or supervision of the related family member.
